Janine Wetzel Wins on Sakakawea

Janine Wetzel

Our first club camping weekend of the year and it couldn’t have turned out better, Mother nature decided to cooperate the day before the tourneys pre-fishing was outstanding with calm seas and good weather.  It was a good thing because we were on big water!  The night before storms rolled thru and storms were threatening us the morning of the first tournament which was held on Audubon Lake.

It was not too bad the wind came up for a while in the morning the water was rough the skies were cloudy and rain appeared immanent but it held off and the water calmed down and fishing was good, The Wetzel’s Jeff and Janine were on a mission Audubon is there favorite lake and they fish there many times throughout the year and they did well!

Top 3 For Audubon-

  1st place :  Jeff Wetzel 9.19 pds  Big fish ( 3.38 pds)

  2nd place : Janine Wetzel 8.30 pds

  3rd place :  Marty Mantz 8.24 pds

Everyone went back to the camps and some of us went to the bar in Cole harbor to have the gigantic prime rib steak!  If you never had it, you are definitely missing out.  Off to bed we all went after some fish stories and got up the next day to head over to Lake Sakakawea, the skies were blue and the wind was calm with heavy winds forecasted but not till later in the day.  Mother nature was nice to us and held off the winds till the tourney was over, A good thing because Sakakawea is the biggest lake in ND and the second biggest man made reservoir in the USA so it can get very rough there fast.

Where does one go on a lake so big?  The answer is simple wherever the weather allows you to go!  Some boats took off headed to far off places and some stayed right in the bay we launched out of, there were boats scattered from 1/2 mile from the dock to more than 25 miles away.  The Wetzel’s were at it again they fish this lake a lot also, Janine was on a mission to resolve the defeat by her husband Jeff the day before and she did just that taking home the trophy and again narrowly defeating Marty for the second time in 2 days by the slightest of margins.

Top 3 For Lake Sakakwea-

  1st place :  Janine Wetzel :  7.58 pds  big fish ( 2.96 pds)

  2nd place :  Marty Mantz :  7.52 pds

  3rd place :  Nate Dirks :  6.63 pds.

It was a good weekend it was a Wetzel weekend!  Jeff and Janine put the smack down on the fish all weekend long and moved up considerably in the standings it’ll be a very competitive year for those two.  I guess we shall see in the end which one comes out on top.  Marty hung in there, took the assault, and got a couple good finishes and narrow defeats by Janine to maintain the points lead.  Congrats, Nate on your 3rd place finish.  A good time was had by all and we shall se ya next stop in SD for the Mobridge and Pudwell tourneys, those should prove interesting for sure.  Watch out for the Reinbolds on that set of tourneys it's tough to beat someone on there home waters.
